WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND AN INJURED BAT California Bat Conservation Fund

Bats are wild animals and should NEVER be picked up or handled with your bare hands. Also, do NOT attempt to treat, feed, or wash an injured bat.

  1. Without touching the bat, gently scoop the animal into a small container (like a shoe box) using a cloth or piece of paper
  2. Put a soft cloth into the box to give the bat something to cling to
  3. Cover the box and place it where it cannot be disturbed by pets or children
  4. Immediately contact the California Bat Conservation Fund or the partner organization located nearest to you
If you find an injured bat hanging from a wall or tree
  1. Wait until evening to see if the bat leaves on its own
  2. If it does not leave on its own, contact the California Bat Conservation Fund or the partner organization located nearest to you
If you find a bat in your home
  1. Open all doors and windows that lead outside
  2. Close off the rest of the house
  3. Turn out the lights
  4. Leave the bat for a few hours to see if it leaves on its own
  5. If it does not leave, contact the California Bat Conservation Fund or the partner organization located nearest to you
